You may have heard that the “Breaking Bad” movie “El Camino” is now available streaming on Netflix. It’s been out a few weeks and diehard “Breaking Bad” fans were losing it. I loved the show, but I’m just not sure I care.

“El Camino” is some closure on the Jesse chapter. The show left things with him open-ended, but not a cliff hanger. I liked the ambiguity as it wasn’t overt, but it still left his destiny in the heart of the viewer. Did you love Jesse and feel for everything he went through and hope that gets to start over? Or were you one of the people that thought he deserved his torture after all the horrible things he did? If so, maybe you assumed the authorities caught up with him and he’d serve his time in jail.

Either way, it was one of the best endings to a series I’ve ever seen and “El Camino” kind of diminishes that. The actual movie is great. It felt like a two-part episode with a bigger budget and you do get closure on Jesse. Along with a few cameo’s from other stars from the show, it’s a great trip. Of course, the tension and anxiety the show produced are still present here and the tone and everything feels like we haven’t missed a day.

But…….we didn’t need it. And this happens so often in movies and TV now. We just make more for the sake of more. I’m guilty of it too. I’m all over it with Star Wars. But what does it do to the essence of those creations? It diminishes the magic. They no longer seem so special. Marvel has easily had the best run, but I think we will see the fallout after the peak of “Endgame”. More is not always better, it is not always necessary. This is an instance of it being cool but totally unnecessary and now the incredibly powerful ending of the show has lost some of its magic.

So, if you’re a fan “El Camino” is great. But if you don’t have Netflix and you truly loved the way things were left on “Breaking Bad” it might be worth avoiding. If you are one of those people that can’t stand ambiguity then perhaps you need this, but I didn’t.
