Review: Bird Box and Dumplin’

Caught a few Netflix movies this week….Bird Box and Dumplin’.   I was pretty underwhelmed by both, however each was completely fine if you aren’t looking for anything above mediocre to entertain you.  Bird Box was a psychological thriller about some entity that will make you see your worst nightmares and incite you to kill yourself if you open your eyes.  Apparently the barrier of a door or car or sheet can conveniently stop this thing and that theme of convenience is what propels the entire story.  Dumplin’ in contrast is an uplifting story about an overweight girl who’s grown up in the shadows of her beauty queen mom and idolizes the magnificent Dolly Parton.  The daughter enters the town beauty pageant as a form of protest and inspiration and character evolution ensues.  Now you’ve hear the plots…’s my brief and lackluster response.

Bird Box (2018)

Bird Box played well enough off of built up tension and had some decent performances. Sandra Bullock (who I do not like) was very good as the protagonist, John Malkovich did Malky, Dr. Wu’s brief appearance was enjoyable, but the star here was Trevante Rhodes. He is beautiful, charming and can act. As one of the only redeeming parts of The Predator in 2018 and I anticipate seeing a lot more of him in the future. Please also feel free to enjoy music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, but after that it became what annoys me about this genre in general….people are morons and do stupid things in order for the plot to move forward. There was unfulfilled potential here and as the movie moved toward it’s conclusion I became less and less interested with how or why things ended as they did. The continued “coincidences” left me perturbed, but overall I see why the movie worked.

Dumplin’ (2018)

Dumplin’…..sigh…….Yes, it was a “feel good” movie. Yes, it had sincere and sweet moments, but…..I still don’t care. It’s all been done before and even though it did ignore some of the cliches these brand of movies usually produce it still regurgitated the same tale I’ve seen so many times before. I understand why a lot of people have enjoyed it, but it’s just not my cup of tea.  This might be a great movie for a lot of people, but for me there’s just nothing new here. Oh and all the people having tantrums that it promotes obesity? Get a grip. The movie is about accepting yourself as you are and loving yourself which is wonderful.  If you think there’s something wrong with that I recommend you start eating Tide Pods.

Side note……Danielle McDonald was in both of these films. She was good in Dumplin’, but I saw potential in her in Bird Box.

  1. Had no idea that Trent Radnor and Attucus Ross or is it Finch. I get those 2 confused did the score. Might have to check that out but I really want to listen to book first before I do and I far behind reading because I’m a slow reader.

    • Hey Vern, I thought it sounded like them at certain points. I’m not certain they did the entire film, but they did do a big part at the very least. I heard the book was better and author is local around here and has a reputation for being bonkers. My favorite kind of human.
